Whenever there are hormones involved… male or female. There will be mood changes. Remember during puberty your parents called it ‘mood swings’. When your hormones were changing, increasing and decreasing. It affected you mentally. Steroids are no different, and could anabolic steroids be responsible for such mood changes? Literally, they are male hormones after all. The ANDROGENIC part is the one where it’s side effects. The more androgenic the steroid the more side effects it usually has.
When you start taking anabolics you will feel and think differently. Certain things might piss you off more or you may feel more strongly about certain subjects or situations.
Steroids also affect your fight or flight response, making you more fight than flight. Basically up for a fight a lot more. Not as scared. This can also be dangerous.

this guy got his hands on the super soldier serum aka STEROIDS lol
Combining alcohol with anabolic steroids… Stay Out Of Trouble
This is a serious problem. This is also more of a do as I say not as I do point lol. Already on steroids, you have an increase in irritation and aggression. Now combine that with alcohol which is basically poison and has extreme mental side effects as well. Whether it makes you want a fight or more easily pissed off by someone who does, it’s not a good idea and should be avoided. Especially environments with alcohol they are usually with drunken idiots intoxicated unaware of what they are doing. Everybody can see you are already big and strong bro, you have nothing to prove to some loser picking on you. Don’t go for the bait man. This is asking for trouble… DO NOT ATTEMPT
Additionally, the resting adrenaline is also higher. People will notice you acting differently and they will also look at you differently.
People tend to forget that steroids just don’t affect muscles but the brain just as much or more. Very potent mental side effects. Also, I’ve seen it more extreme with younger guys taking steroids.
To be honest with you as well, steroids in general make you feel like, or at least with me it was ‘im ready for a fight, not looking for one but if it happens I’m down for it’
1. What is Roid Rage?
Definition: Roid rage refers to the extreme irritability, aggression, and mood swings that some individuals reportedly experience when using anabolic steroids. Anabolic steroids account for extreme behavioral changes, including irritability and aggression.
Popular culture: It’s often depicted in media as a key side effect of steroid abuse. I think this has been taken out of hand, STEROIDS MAKE YOU FEEL MORE ASSERTIVE
When I first started taking steroids, it was like I felt more like ‘no more Mr Nice Guy’ in my everyday life and work, which actually helped me and prevented people from trying to take advantage or pick a fight.

2. The Science Behind It
- Steroids and brain chemistry: Anabolic steroids affect the body’s hormonal system, especially by increasing testosterone levels. Some research suggests that elevated testosterone can alter mood and behavior. However, the exact mechanisms are not fully understood.
- Neurotransmitters: Steroids can influence the balance of chemicals in the brain like dopamine and serotonin, which are responsible for mood regulation.
What’s your stack?
It’s important to note that not everyone who uses anabolic steroids will experience roid rage. The severity of symptoms can vary depending on the individual, the dose, and the duration of steroid use. Some might experience mild irritability, while others could have such a severe reaction that it leads to violent behavior. Recognizing these signs early can help in managing and mitigating the effects. This is another major role, where it also depends on the TYPE of steroids you’re taking. For example, a guy who takes test and Anavar may only feel milder and more benefits such as increased sex drive and positive aggression. Whereas a guy blasting a lot of TREN (which is notorious for roid rage) may be down to the chemistry of the 19-nor compound and the prolactin effects on the brain. I think this is a MAJOR factor.
2.1 How Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (AAS) Affect the Brain
Anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) can have a significant impact on the brain, leading to changes in mood, behavior, and cognitive function. When these synthetic substances related to male sex hormones are introduced into the body, they bind to androgen receptors in the brain. This binding can alter the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, which are crucial for mood regulation. As a result, users might experience increased irritability, anxiety, and even aggressive behavior.
2.2 The Role of Testosterone in Aggression
Testosterone, the primary male sex hormone, plays a significant role in aggression. When anabolic steroid use elevates testosterone levels, it can lead to increased aggression and competitiveness. This is because testosterone influences the brain’s reward system, making individuals more sensitive to rewards and less sensitive to punishment. Essentially, high testosterone can make you more likely to take risks and act aggressively.
However, the relationship between testosterone and aggression isn’t straightforward. Genetics, environment, and individual personality traits also play crucial roles. For some, elevated testosterone might lead to aggressive behavior, while others might not experience such a severe reaction. The context in which testosterone levels are elevated also matters. For instance, someone using steroids for bodybuilding might experience different effects compared to someone using them for competitive sports. So, while testosterone can contribute to aggression, it’s not the sole factor at play.

Contradictory evidence: Other research suggests that aggression and violent behavior are not universally observed in steroid users. There’s also the argument that the connection might be more anecdotal than scientifically proven.
4. Psychological Factors of Steroids
- The tolerance for bullshit goes WAY down. Which can also be a good thing… who wants to tolerate bullshit all day?
- More assertive. You defend your rights more, more courage in your conviction. More difficult to control and manipulate.
- Positive aggression, where this is controlled and get a positive outcome, whether in the gym or at work.
Conclusion:
While there is some evidence to suggest that anabolic steroids can have psychological effects, whether they directly cause “roid rage” remains controversial. It’s important to consider both biological and psychological factors when evaluating the phenomenon.
We have to consider all this. Be mindful when on cycle that there may be certain things you usually wouldn’t do off cycle. Is it really you? Was that the real Cavan who acted tough with his big muscles?
Lastly, the guy’s personality is also a major factor, some guys never change even on steroids, the most mellow guys ever and nothing annoys them. Ultimately it’s done to the bodybuilder’s responsibility to control these ‘devil on the left shoulder’ feelings.
